Researchers have just discovered yet another reason for Omega-3 consumption. Harvard scientists have discovered that Omega-3’s play a vital role in the preservation of the blood-brain barrier (BBB).
The BBB is a layer of cells that protects the Central Nervous System from blood-borne bacteria, toxins and other pathogens. It was found that DHA (type of omega-3) plays a role in fortifying the blood-brain barrier. There is a specific transport protein that incorporates DHA into the membrane making it less penetrable by pathogens. Scientists have always struggled to transport medications to treat brain diseases such as cancer, stroke and Alzheimer’s. With this new breakthrough scientists will be able to manipulate the blood brain barrier to better administer treatments.
Omega-3’s are an essential fatty acid. Meaning our body needs them to function properly. It is very difficult, if not impossible to consume the daily recommended amount through diet alone. This is due to many factors including poor soil and contaminated fish.
In our office it is recommended for our patients to supplement their diet with Omega-3’s because of their healing properties. This new information just adds to the long list of reasons someone should supplement their body with Omega-3.
